WASHINGTON (11/5/15)--Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas) was elected chair of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee Wednesday, taking the place of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who is now speaker of the House. CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle congratulated Brady following his election.
“On behalf of credit unions and our over 100 million members, we congratulate Congressman Brady on being selected the next chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. Congressman Brady is a dedicated public servant who has always been a friend to credit unions,” Nussle said. “We appreciate his leadership, his open door policy and his understanding of the role credit unions play in the lives of millions of Americans. We look forward to continuing to work with him as legislative policy is crafted on Capitol Hill.”
Brady previously expressed his support for maintaining credit unions’ tax status, which is CUNA’s top advocacy priority. In 2013, with the House Ways and Means Committee examining tax reform, Brady was one of many high-ranking members of the committee to give statements in support of the credit union tax status.
In a meeting with Texas credit unions the same year, Brady called credit unions the “gold standard” when it comes to advocacy efforts.
Brady’s remarks came in the midst of CUNA’s “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” campaign, which saw hundreds of thousands of contacts made online with lawmakers, as well as engagement from stakeholders from more than 2,000 credit unions.
