SACRAMENTO, Calif. (12/8/15)--Diana Dykstra, president/CEO of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues, has been named president of Western CUNA Management School (WCMS), the board of trustees announced this week. Dykstra will replace James D. Likens, who has served as the organization’s president for 44 years.
The board also announced that Michael Steinberger will expand his role and begin serving as the dean of academics.
“(Dykstra’s) work on campus and her leadership role in the credit union movement will be critically important as the school works to meet the ever-changing leadership development needs of today’s credit unions,” said Gene Pelham, WCMS board chair and president/CEO of Rogue CU, Medford, Ore.
Dykstra will guide WCMS into a new era of credit union leadership development, the board said. She will serve as the executive lead and as a direct connection between the school and the credit union movement.
Dykstra, a project reader and an instructor at the school, graduated WCMS with honors in 1992, and has served as the president of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues since 2010.
Steinberger, who will partner with Dykstra on this effort, will serve as the academic lead and as the principal driver of future-focused leadership development programs, according to the board. Steinberger joined WCMS in 2006 as associate dean, and is an associate professor of economics as well as a recent department chair at Pomona College, Claremont, Calif.
“Michael will bring to WCMS academic leadership of the highest order,” Likens said.
Added Dykstra: “Michael has been instrumental in building a strong academic program for our students. Under Dr. Likens’ mentorship, he has been fully immersed in the school’s ethos and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with him to build upon the legacy of Dr. Likens.”
Likens will officially step down Dec. 31. Dykstra and Steinberger, meanwhile, are currently working on building out a new strategic plan and curriculum for next school year.
