Monday’s breakouts address changing climates for CUs

Conference attendees will find out how the 2016 elections may affect their CUs.

February 21, 2016

Monday’s breakout sessions at the CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference address bandwidth-heavy topics: The political climate, the economic climate and the regulatory climate.

They include:

• #CUVote16: The 2016 Elections and Your Credit Union. As the 2016 political campaigns ramp up, credit unions will need to know how to shape the outcome and address the results.

• Credit Unions and Taxation: Imminent and Over-the-Horizon Threats. Panelists will present their insights and experiences as lawmakers seek to close budget deficits by looking to wring revenue from tax-exempt entities like credit unions.

• Economic Outlook and Credit Unions. CUNA’s economic experts will offer their forecast for the U.S. economy in 2016 and the implications for credit union financial operations—loan and savings growth, earnings and capital.

• Impact of NCUA’s Field-of-Membership Modernization Efforts. Panelists will discuss the implications of the proposed field-of-membership rules from the NCUA and how the rules can be used to help federal credit unions serve potential members that were previously unreachable.

• The New Culture of Compliance: Examiners’ Expectations for CU Volunteers. Credit union volunteers face a heavy burden with compliance changes. Federal examiners are holding board directors responsible for promoting an enterprise-wide culture of compliance--and liable for weak compliance efforts.

• CUNA Bylaws Overview and Q&A. This session provides an opportunity to learn about CUNA’s efforts to modernize its bylaws, key elements of the proposed bylaws and the importance of every member credit union’s vote.
