James Schenck, president/CEO of PenFed Credit Union, received Credit Union Magazine's 2017 Credit Union Hero of the Year award during Monday’s general session at the America’s Credit Union Conference.
“He’s one of the ones who gets out of the stands and gets playing,” says CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle in introducing Schenck.
Schenck received a standing ovation from the crowd as Nussle and representatives from award sponsor CSCU presented the award.
“First and foremost, I’m extremely humbled to be nominated for this award,” Schenck says, giving credit to his employees, board, and PenFed members.
“I’d like to accept this award on behalf of the many people who serve the credit union movement—the 300,000 credit union employees and 70,000 board members who are part of the team of teams who serve our members,” he says.
Other Credit Union Hero of the Year finalists were Amy Nelson, CEO, Point West Credit Union, Portland, Ore.; Dan Newberry, vice president of retail operations, TTCU The Credit Union, Tulsa, Okla.; and Karen Reams, CEO, Millstream Area Credit Union, Findlay, Ohio.
