CUNA urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) this week to move forward quickly on a notice of proposed rulemaking for the establishment of a database for reassigned numbers. The letter follows up CUNA’s August letter in which it backed the creation of such a database that all voice providers are required to report to.
In August, CUNA wrote that “a national database under the auspices of the Commission and operated by a Commission-designated and supervised entity would best guarantee accurate and timely information on reassigned numbers.”
CUNA’s comments were echoed by a number of other commenters, most notably that:
CUNA also supports other suggestions for ensuring a robust, accessible database, including utilizing standardized, widely available formats; ensuring that ported numbers are not included in the database; and reporting the dates when a number is disconnected or reassigned.
CUNA disagrees with commenters that would refer the question of establishing a database to the North American Numbering Council. CUNA believes this would result in unnecessary delay and create other potential complexities.
