Oct. 19 is International Credit Union Day, when credit unions remind their members that they can achieve their biggest goals in life with the theme "Dreams Thrive Here."
CUNA and the World Council of Credit Unions announced the theme for the 2017 event.
“Credit unions improve the financial lives of their members every day of the year,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle. “International Credit Union Day is an opportunity to celebrate the credit union difference with our members and remind the world that credit unions are the best financial choice for consumers.”
ICU Day—celebrated on the third Thursday of every October since 1948—is the one day every year the worldwide movement bands together to celebrate the spirit and philosophy of credit unions.
Credit unions celebrate by offering refreshments and giveaways to members in their branches, and by getting out in their communities to do volunteer work and outreach.
WyHy CU, Cheyenne, Wyo., is offering two members a $100 VISA gift card to shares their stories about how the credit union has made their dreams come true.
Carolina FCU, Cherryville, N.C., is offering a free hot dog lunch and a door prize drawing.
The New York Credit Union Association was joined at the state Capitol yesterday by more than 150 credit union advocates who gathered in celebration of International Credit Union Week and the Association’s 100-year anniversary. During the event—which was attended by state lawmakers—the Association unveiled a document signed by more than 300 New York credit unions pledging to support the credit union mission and philosophy for the next 100 years and beyond. A citation from Gov. Andrew Cuomo was also unveiled.

CUNA is once again teaming with Credit Unions for Kids on ICU Day for Shop for Miracles 2017. Through this campaign, participating credit unions will make a donation to a local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for each credit or debit card transaction made by their members today.
Credit Unions for Kids is a nonprofit collaboration of credit unions, chapters, leagues/associations and business partners from across the country, engaged in fundraising activities to benefit 170 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Adopted as the movement’s charity of choice, credit unions are the third- largest sponsor of CMN Hospitals. Since 1996, CU4Kids has raised $160 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
OnPoint Community CU, Portland, Ore., is holding a Credit Union for Kids coin drive. Through Oct. 31, canisters will be placed at teller windows at all OnPoint branches to collect funds in support of Credit Union for Kids.
In addition to the coin drive, OnPoint make a $5,000 donation to OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, a local Children’s Miracle Network hospital, on behalf of the credit union’s members.
