Nearly 150 comments have already been uploaded to the FCC's website on CUNA’s Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) petition during the 30-day comment period, which closed Monday. CUNA filed its petition with the Federal Communications Commission last month, outlining ways the agency could provide relief to credit unions confused about compliance with the TCPA.
The FCC issued the petition for public comment within a week, and CUNA will have until Nov. 21 to make any reply comments. Dozens of credit unions and other third-party supporters weighed in, in support of the petition and CUNA's suggestions for potential exemptions.
Changes to the TCPA were finalized by the FCC in 2015. CUNA is concerned that these changes, in addition to a convoluted regulatory landscape from other FCC rulings and orders, are stifling the ability of credit unions to contact members with important account information, due to risks of not being in compliance with the changes.
