As the credit union system becomes acquainted with CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle, the former legislator is actively sharing his advocacy vision with credit unions and leagues, CUNA’s News Now reports.
Nussle joined CUNA Sept. 22, 2014.
The new CUNA leader says credit unions will win with CUNA's three-point value proposition: focus on advocacy, create awareness of credit unions, and foster service excellence for members.
“When the credit union industry is growing, that’s winning,” says Nussle, who cites the need for communicating effectively with not only the credit union movement, but with elected officials and regulators.
That involves telling the credit union story and expanding the advocacy involvement of everyone who has a stake in credit unions, from employees to members.
Nussle cites the importance of forming relationships with legislators early on, not just when issues concerning credit unions arise. He advises credit unions to connect with officials while they are still candidates, so by the time they are elected and making policy decisions, credit union leaders are familiar faces.
Advocacy isn’t just the responsibility of CUNA and state leagues, Nussle adds. Credit union staff—and even members—are important to making sure legislators hear the credit union message.
