WASHINGTON (3/10/15)--Susan Streifel, president/CEO, Woodstone CU, Federal Way, Wash., was elected Monday as chairwoman of CUNA's board of directors, during a board meeting at the 2015 Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) in Washington, D.C.
Streifel succeeds outgoing board Chairman Dennis Pierce, retired president/CEO of CommunityAmerica CU, Lenexa, Kan.
During Monday's opening general session, Pierce addressed the GAC audience, outlining a number of credit union accomplishments during his year as chair, including the hiring of Jim Nussle as new CUNA president/CEO and the movement surpassing 100 million memberships.
Pierce also challenged the credit union leaders in the room to engage their members to become advocates for the credit union movement, and to go to Congress and ask lawmakers to treat credit unions differently from banks because of credit unions' not-for-profit cooperative structure.
"The only way we're going to win in D.C. is by asking our members to come and speak on our behalf," Pierce said. "Our members want to engage, they want to support us, they want to be a part of helping us be successful. We just have to get past our own fears of getting them to do that."
