The name change and brand refresh, which includes a new logo and tagline of "Strength in members," will be implemented in a soft rollout that will coincide with the launch of a new league website later this year.
The league's board of directors voted to pursue the brand refresh and name change during its June quarterly planning session.
"By placing New York first, we directly communicate what state we represent," wrote Laurie Baker, the league's board chair, in a July letter to member credit unions. "We believe the new name presents a stronger, more independent identity for the association, and it allows us to support a national agreed-upon movement towards state-focused branding and advocacy initiatives."
Following the board's approval, a monthlong membership vote was held Aug. 6 through Sept. 5.
"The overall brand refresh includes a succinct and straightforward name, a modernized logo and a tagline that clearly conveys the overall credit union philosophy," said William J. Mellin, league president/CEO.
