Washington, D.C. (August 7, 2018)—The Credit Union National Association (CUNA), its political action committee the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) and state leagues are closely watching primary elections in several states Tuesday, as well as the special election in Ohio’s 12th Congressional District.

In Kansas’ 4th Congressional District, credit unions are supporting incumbent Rep. Ron Estes (R) in his primary. Estes is facing an opponent with the same name—Ron M. Estes.

Rep. Estes is a strong credit union supporter and served as a member of Wichita-based MidAmerica CU’s supervisory committee.

To dispel potential voter confusion, CUNA, the Heartland Credit Union Association and Kansas credit unions have worked on a campaign supporting Rep. Estes among credit union employees and volunteers.

In Michigan’s 9th Congressional District, CULAC and the Michigan Credit Union League are supporting Andy Levin in the Democratic primary. Levin is campaigning for the seat currently held by his father, Rep. Sandy Levin (D), who is retiring.

Andy Levin is facing state Rep. Ellen Lipton in the Democratic primary.

Credit unions are also supporting a candidate in the special election in Ohio’s 12th Congressional District, to fill the seat of Rep. Pat Tiberi (R). who resigned in January.

CULAC and the Ohio Credit Union League support state Sen. Troy Balderson (R) in the special election. Balderson faces off against Franklin County Recorder Danny O’Connor (D).

The winner of Tuesday’s special election will be seated immediately. Both Balderson and O’Connor will face off again in November, with that winner serving a full term.
