Boulder Valley CU Wins Lifetime Achievement Award

CU honored for its youth financial literacy efforts.

March 6, 2012

Boulder (Colo.) Valley Credit Union (BVCU) received the Education Credit Union Council's 2011 “It's About People Helping People” Lifetime Achiever Award for its comprehensive financial literacy program.

The award recognizes BVCU’s philosophical commitment to supplementing classroom education with hands-on learning.

BVCU’s strategies included integrating student credit unions into the district's financial literacy curriculum and incorporating classroom presentations to provide a solid educational foundation.

The primary focus is to foster financial education by giving students the opportunity to manage their own accounts and establish credit responsibility skills before they graduate. Parents are encouraged to work with their student members in reconciling their accounts regularly and praise them for sensible spending habits.

In order to help students avoid making costly mistakes, online financial education modules are available for students to learn more about savings products, how credit works, managing a checking account, and more.

Student learning and involvement was paramount. Each student branch has two student employee/interns that work at the student branch during their lunch period for an elective business class. They are professionally trained and receive valuable skills to help further their education.

In addition, a student from a drafting class designed a student branch office, and media students developed viral advertisements to raise awareness of the benefits of joining the student credit union.

Select FBLA and DECA students participate on the student credit union’s Student Advisory Board to develop business plans and marketing strategies, let students know the benefit of their student credit union, and encourage students to join.

This award is a tribute to BVCU’s management team and board of directors for their vision in embracing financial literacy and community outreach, dedicated employees who manage the day-to-day operations, the business/finance teachers for integrating the hands-on education into their classroom learning, and to the students and their families for joining BVCU for hands-on financial education.
