Daniel Burns

Daniel Burns, WOCCU treasurer and chair of CU Central of Canada, welcomes attendees to Ottawa.

Burns noted the event’s proximity to the birthplace of Canada’s CU movement in Levis, Quebec, led by CU pioneer and journalist Alphonse Desjardins. Desjardins later helped create the St. Mary’s Cooperative Credit Association in Manchester, N.H.—the first CU in the U.S.

This institution continues to operate today as St. Mary’s Bank CU.
