Every leader wants a nimble team that can seize opportunities and create breakthrough innovations.

But this takes more than bringing great minds together. A leader must set the stage for positive, productive energy.

These five principles, according to Strategy+Business, can ignite the creative engine inside each member of your team:

1. You’re better together. Start with the assumption that every member of your team has a piece that will solve the puzzle. Valued team members invest more in the outcome.

2. Encourage multiple victories. Lower the stakes on individual confrontations. Allow for multiple solutions to problems. Create an environment where team members don’t have to win in every instance because they can win the next round.

3. Be gentle. Encourage the battle of ideas, not personal battles. Be forthright and discard bad ideas, but don’t make it personal. Everyone should feel good about the back-and-forth.

4. Find clarity. Ensure everyone is understood. That can mean unpacking jargon and revealing underlying assumptions.

5. Be more creative, less clever. Polished thoughts can stifle creativity. Allow sparks to ignite from halfbaked ideas. Get provocative. Get the juices flowing.
