WASHINGTON (6/2/15)--With the U.S. Senate and House both in session this week, CUNA will be monitoring a patent reform markup, among other activities.
On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a markup of the Protecting American Talent and Entrepreneurship (PATENT) Act (S. 1137). CUNA and its coalition partners will submit a letter for the record of the markup.
S. 1137 would call for civil penalties to be levied by the Federal Trade Commission in connection with patent assertion entities that engage in widespread demand letter abuse.
CUNA believes that patent reform should focus on the effect of patent demand letters on end users, rather than knowledge of the violator.
Other hearings on the schedule include:
The House will also consider a number of bills this week under suspension of the rules, including the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2016 (H.R. 2577) and the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2016 (H.R. 2578).
