MADISON, Wis. (6/5/15)--Financial exploitation is sadly only one of the abuses that the elderly may face, and one that knowledgeable credit unions can help protect their members from.
June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which raises awareness about abuse, neglect and exploitation of the elderly. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates losses of $2.6 billion by elders who are taken advantage of by family, caregivers or “trusted others.”
Enrichment FCU, Oak Ridge, Tenn., will hold a financial exploitation fair June 15 at its main office. Its financial advisory team will be on hand along with experts from Adult Protective Services, the Office on Aging, the U.S. Postal Service, and Medicare and insurance fraud specialists.
Verafin, a CUNA Strategic Services strategic alliance provider, will hold a free webinar at 11:30 a.m. (CT) June 15 that will include a real-life case of elder financial abuse. It also will help credit unions identify red flags and investigate potential abuse.
