In addition to working closely with World Council, try these tips to make the most out of international partnerships:
Be prepared. “At first I was fearful that the group might not be interested, that we’d experience a difficult language barrier, or that they’d be timid and not ask questions,” says Shane Berger, Idaho League chairman and Beehive Federal Credit Union president/ CEO. “Contrary to my fears, the group asked dozens of questions through a capable interpreter and the meetings lasted longer than expected.”
Be open to new ideas. “Encourage credit union boards and executives to be available and invest travel resources to visit systems in other parts of the world,” says Dick Ensweiler, Cornerstone Credit Union League president/CEO. “Expunge any idea that we are the U.S. so we know best.”
Enjoy. “It’s truly a life-changing opportunity to teach, learn, and make lasting relationships with good people in another nation,” Berger says.
