Nussle brings key CU points to 'CUbroadcast'

July 7, 2015

SAN DIEGO (7/7/15)--CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle reiterated the importance of credit unions’ not-for-profit tax status and shared recent CUNA successes with Mike Lawson, host of “CUbroadcast.”

In the 15-minute interview, Nussle highlighted a number of topics including:

  • Bank attacks: Banks have been consistent--and recently more vocal--with their message against credit unions. Nussle said that is why CUNA continues to promote member-owned, member-driver credit unions and their not-for-profit tax status to members of Congress;

  • Truth-in-Lending Act and Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act integrated disclosures rule: Nussle pointed out that CUNA discovered the discrepancy in the small entity compliance guide from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) that would have affected more credit unions than originally imagined. Further, while the Oct. 3 grace period is welcome, he said CUNA has been aggressively working with the CFPB to provide a safe harbor period through the end of the year; and

  • Member advocacy: “The CUNA/league system is the predominant voice when it comes to credit unions in advocacy, in particular,” he said. CUNA’s Member Activation Program engages the movement’s 100 million members and amplifies their message. “Advocacy is changing--members of Congress, policymakers and regulators listen to the voices of the people,” he said.

Nussle also called for nominations for Credit Union Magazine’s Rock Stars--people who have gone above and beyond in the credit union movement--and talked about next week’s America’s Credit Union Conference and World Credit Union Conference in Denver. The conference is a collaboration between CUNA and the World Council of Credit Unions.
