MADISON, Wis. (8/13/15)--CUNA is offering a webinar on the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) recent Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) order for businesses that communicate with consumers by telephone. The webinar will be held at noon (ET) on Sept. 1.
The order took immediate effect upon its release on July 10. With a private right of action, no cap on class action liability, statutory damages of $500 per violation (up to $1,500 if willful), and each illegal call treated as a separate violation, credit unions have little time to waste in implementing new communication practices necessary to avoid TCPA liability.
Earlier this month, CUNA wrote a letter to the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) expressing concerns how the order will impact the ability of members to communicate with their members. While the NCUA does not have jurisdiction over the TCPA, CUNA’s letter urges their consumer protection office to advocate on behalf of credit unions to the FCC.
