EuniceMugShot1BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (8/14/15)--Eunice Johnson Rogers, president/CEO of NRS Community Development FCU, Birmingham, Ala., was named the 2015 Annie Vamper Helping Hands Award winner by the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions this week. The award is the highest honor given by the federation. “We have many deserving candidates for the [award] each year,” said Cathie Mahon, federation president/CEO. “This year, we applaud Eunice Rogers for her commitment to low- and moderate-income consumers in Birmingham. Eunice runs a small, faith-based community development credit union that offers its 375 members a full range of services, including online banking. Though small in size, NRS has an enormous impact in its community. The NRS focus on anti-predatory lending has broken the debt cycle for hundreds in Alabama” …

CHICAGO (8/14/15)--Alliant CU netted nearly $15,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with its 10th annual employee volleyball tournament July 30. Employee donations accounted for half of the money with a matching grant from the Alliant Credit Union Foundation. Nine teams competed in the tournament held at Alliant’s headquarters in Chicago. The winning team, Honey Badger Don’t Care, said its success could be attributed to having participants from multiple departments. “We proved that victory comes to those who work together and bring the best to their game,” said Aman Boyd, senior manager of the loan trading desk, in the credit union’s blog. “That’s how we played volleyball and that’s how we do business at Alliant” ...

SAN DIEGO (8/14/15)--The Guinness World Record for the most paper collected in a 24-hour period now belongs to San Diego County CU (SDCCU), which set the record last month during its SDCCU Super Shred Event. At the event, which was held at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, more than 10,000 people dropped off roughly 584,350 pounds of paper, which was later shredded and recycled. The massive amount of paper saves roughly 5,000 trees according to the credit union. “SDCCU is committed to helping our customers and the community protect their confidential data and privacy,” said Teresa Halleck, SDCCU president/CEO. “We are dedicated to preventing identity theft as well as helping the community go green with our online banking services, such as eStatements and eReceipts” …

WaterTEXARKANA, Texas (8/14/15)--Red River FCU has donated more than 2,800 bottles of water to Randy Sams Outreach Shelter, Texarkana, Texas, after learning about the shelter’s need to provide the precious resource to homeless people. Bottled water works particularly well because recipients can refill the bottles during the day, and it can be given to people who may use the shelter during the day, said Jennifer Laurent, the shelter’s executive director (Leaguer Aug. 13). After a visit to the shelter, Patricia Cunningham, Red River director of marketing, spread the word, and donations of water and money both started to flow in. In addition to the July 31 delivery by Richard King and Shane Rainwater, right, Red River FCU is continuing to collect donations and will purchase more water. Laurent said the facility uses five to six cases of water per day, so the credit union’s donation would cover roughly a week (Cornerstone Credit Union League Photo) ...
