MADISON, Wis. (10/20/15)--For serving the credit union movement for four decades in a number of capacities, C. Alan Peppers, former president/CEO, Westerra CU, Denver, will receive a 2016 Herb Wegner Memorial Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement.
Peppers has served in a variety of leadership roles throughout his career, including as board chair for CUNA Mutual Group, the National Credit Union Foundation and the Colorado Credit Union League. He’s also served as a member of numerous CUNA task forces and committees.

As chair of the Colorado league, Peppers achieved 100 percent affiliation for the first time in the organization’s history by “demonstrating the importance of cooperation between fellow credit unions,” the foundation said.
“Alan has had a longstanding belief that preserving credit unions as an alternative to banks, and ensuring their competitiveness in the financial services marketplace are important responsibilities--and these are accomplished through unity,” said Carroll D. Beach, former Colorado Credit Union System president. “Alan’s leadership has not only benefited Colorado’s credit unions, but the movement as a whole.”
Perhaps his greatest successes, however, came at the helm of Westerra.
In his 22-year stint as president/CEO, Westerra membership quadrupled, while assets increased to $1.3 billion from $165 million.
According to the foundation, under his direction, Westerra became one of the highest-performing credit unions in both Colorado and nationwide.
Peppers’ members-first mentality drove that success, the foundation said.
“Before making any decisions, Alan asked ‘What would be in the best interest of the members?’” said Cynthia Stevenson, former superintendent of Jeffco Public Schools. “In leading the merger of our credit unions, it was apparent his mission was to ensure more people had access to credit union services, financial education and the other opportunities that credit unions can offer to members.”
