NAPERVILLE, Ill. (10/22/15)--Credit union affiliations continue to rise. In Illinois, four credit unions have affiliated thus far this year, according to the Illinois Credit Union League.
That adds to the recent string of credit union affiliations throughout the CUNA-league system.
Tom Kane, league president/CEO, told News Now that the collaboration between CUNA and the league has led to only positive results, and that collaboration on issues at both the state and federal levels has benefited both organizations, and in turn member credit unions.
“We work really well together with CUNA,” Kane said. “It’s a really strong partnership, and I do believe that the best structure is to have a strong CUNA and a strong league working together. Particularly for advocacy, we have a strong voice. The two organizations together have done very well.”
CUNA has seen 78 credit unions re-affiliate this year and the nation’s largest credit union trade association now boasts a membership of 5,245, or roughly 85% of all U.S. credit unions.
Fourteen of the credit unions are state-chartered, while the other 64 hold federal charters. (See News Now Oct. 19: Training, advocacy valued by newest CUNA-league affiliates)
