NORTH CANTON, Ohio (10/23/15)--Diebold, Inc., and SimplyTapp have teamed up to leverage ATMs for digital wallet security by providing a secure card onboarding process, XPRESSION SafeLoad, to reduce card fraud.
Diebold is a CUNA Strategic Services strategic alliance provider. SimplyTapp is a company specializing in mobile near field communications (NFC) payment and host card emulation (HCE) technology.
The onboarding process requires the card to be inserted into the ATM’s card reader and authenticated with a PIN. On the ATM screen, the consumer will have the option to enroll in the financial institution’s mobile wallet service. Consumers choosing that option will enter their mobile phone number and receive a text message with a link to download the application.
The process automatically encrypts the consumer’s card data in the form of tokens and transfers SimplyTapp’s HCE solution from the ATM to the card issuer’s secure, virtual cloud. The consumer can then start using the NFC tap-to-pay functionality of the phone at the ATM or any point-of-sale device that accepts contactless payments.
The process is being piloted by America First CU, Salt Lake City, and Banco Popular. Brice Mindrum, America First CU head of mobile services, noted the credit union’s experience with mobile and contactless technologies. “We have been waiting for a mobile payment solution that also incorporates cardless access at the ATM in a way that supports and extends our brand to manage card onboarding more effectively.”
Diebold will showcase the solution next week at the 2015 Money 20/20 Conference in Las Vegas. Pending the results of the pilots, the solution will be ready for market in early 2016, Diebold said.
