WASHINGTON (10/30/15 )--CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle congratulated Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on his election to speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in a roll call vote Thursday.
“I believe Paul has the intelligence, creativity and skill necessary to be a great leader. That’s not only what I see in him today, it’s what I saw in him back when we served in Congress together,” Nussle said. “Paul is someone who not only understands policy, he understands what credit unions do to serve our members and how our business model allows us to support the financial wellbeing of everyday Americans.
“His support of credit unions is evident through his strong relationship with the Wisconsin league and the credit unions in his district,” Nussle added.
The Wisconsin Credit Union League and Wisconsin credit unions have an open, strong relationship with Ryan, said Brett Thompson, president/CEO of the Wisconsin league.
“Paul Ryan is a friend to credit unions,” he said. “He understands the uniqueness of the credit union charter as well as the vital role credit unions play in their communities. We’re lucky to count him among our strongest supporters.”
Ryan is the 54th individual to hold the title speaker of the House, and Thursday marked the 62nd time it has changed hands. Two individuals served in the position three separate times; four others served two separate times as speaker.
