The National Credit Union Foundation is honoring three individuals with 2016 Herb Wegner Memorial Awards, the highest honors in the credit union movement.
Credit Union Magazine asked these credit union leaders to share their best leadership advice.
C. Alan Peppers
Former President/CEO of Westerra Credit Union, Denver. Peppers receives the award for his remarkable leadership, tireless advocacy for the movement, and vigorous charitable efforts.
Peppers’ top five pieces of advice:
1. Do everything you can to help credit union members achieve financial success.
2. Never forget where you came from.
3. Be on time.
4. Be someone that can be trusted and keep your word.
5. Don’t be afraid to take a chance and offer someone an opportunity that might change their life forever.
Daniel F. Egan
Retired president/CEO of the Massachusetts Credit Union League, New Hampshire Credit Union League, and the Credit Union Association of Rhode Island (now known as the Cooperative Credit Union Association). Egan is honored for his career of political, educational, and community engagement that has enriched the lives of millions of Americans.
Egan says, “Leadership is based on a value system that respects the contributions of individuals, supports and promotes cooperation, and enables a clearly focused vision for the future.
"The ability to provide effective leadership is enhanced when one’s personal value system is reflective of the value structure of the organization.”
William J. Bynum
CEO of Hope Credit Union, Jackson, Miss. Bynum is recognized for his efforts providing vital financial services to underprivileged and underserved populations and for his advocacy for the credit union movement.
“None of us exists alone,” Bynum says. “We really rely on each other to be successful. Recognize that we can do more together than as individuals.
"Nowhere is that more evident than in credit unions, whether its members pooling resources to help their neighbors, or the amazing people that volunteer as directors to be stewards of the resources, or my colleagues at Hope Credit Union and the many partners we work with to leverage our resources.”
Since 1989, the Foundation has presented the Herb Wegner Memorial Awards, often referred to as the “Academy Awards” of the credit union movement.
The awards are named in honor of the late CUNA CEO Herb Wegner, whose dedication and innovative ideas truly revolutionized how credit unions serve their communities.
