RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (2/1/16)--For his 30 years of dedicated service to the U.S. Marine Corps, credit union icon Richard Myles Johnson was honored Jan. 20 with a special presentation at an Anaheim Ducks hockey game. The NHL team recognized Johnson’s service after his nomination by CU Direct President/CEO Tony Boutelle, the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues’ newsletter reported (CU Weekly Jan. 21). “I have received a number of awards in my lifetime--some of them very prestigious,” Johnson said. “And although there was no award, as such, last night, the recognition was beyond belief. ...The entire event was a lifetime memory for me.” Johnson began his credit union career working with Western Corporate FCU and the California Credit Union League after ending his military service in 1972. The Richard Myles Johnson Foundation was established to promote credit union education and leadership. GLENDORA, Calif. (2/1/16)--America’s Christian CU (ACCU) will play matchmaker for pets and “forever friends” during its 2nd annual pet adoption event, “Pause for Paws,” Feb. 6. The free event at the credit union’s Glendora, Calif., headquarters will have shelters, rescue organizations and retail vendors. Nearly 20 cats, dogs and bunnies were adopted at last year’s event. Members of the public also can bring their pets to have Valentine’s Day-themed photos taken. PORTLAND, Maine (2/1/16)--The Maine Credit Union League reported the Jan. 26 death of Mary Ann Chamberlain, who served as president/CEO of St. Agatha (Maine) FCU (Weekly Update Jan. 29). Chamberlain, who was 63, led St. Agatha from 1990 to 2012 and helped facilitate the credit union’s merger with Acadia FCU, St. Agatha. Chamberlain was “someone who was dedicated and committed to the credit union philosophy of 'people helping people'. She will be missed,” said league President John Murphy. Noella L'Heureux, 83, of Biddeford, Maine, died Jan. 18 (Journal Tribune Jan. 20). L'Heureux, worked for St. Andre's CU (now Ocean Communities FCU), Biddeford, and Saco Valley CU, Saco, for more than 30 years and received the outstanding credit union employee award from the Maine league in 1993.Don Roberts, former treasurer and CEO of Lewis & Clark School Employees FCU, Helena, Mont., died Jan. 6. He was 84. Roberts started as a supervisory committee member for the credit union in 1958, and ultimately he and his wife, Shirley, ran the credit union out of their home, according to the Helena Independent Record (Jan. 10).
