FARMERS BRANCH, Texas (3/3/16)--Two credit unions were welcomed as new designees to the Juntos Avanzamos program during the annual reception hosted by the Network of Latino Credit Unions and Professionals (NLCUP), held during the Credit Union National Association’s Governmental Affairs Conference last week.
The reception celebrated the nationwide expansion of the Juntos Avanzamos program, which was started 10 years ago by the Texas Credit Union League (now the Cornerstone Credit Union League) as a Hispanic outreach program.
The new designees are Border FCU, Del Rio, Texas, and District Government Employees FCU, Washington, D.C. During the reception, NLCUP presented each designee with a proclamation stating their commitment to the Hispanic market and institutional readiness to meet its needs.
The program expansion by Cornerstone is in coordination with Iowa-based consulting firm Coopera and the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions.
Credit unions inducted into the program demonstrate their ability to serve the Hispanic marketplace by gearing up their operations, products, strategies for serving, and board/staff support relative to this initiative. They staff bilingual tellers, maintain a physical presence in the Hispanic community, and provide relevant products and access to affordable credit and financial education opportunities.
Once a credit union demonstrates its capacity to serve the Hispanic community, it is recognized for its efforts through a comprehensive public relations initiative: a proclamation ceremony and a Juntos Avanzamos flag that is flown at the credit union.
"The opportunity to truly reach out and serve the unserved or underserved is what drives Juntos Avanzamos," said Dick Ensweiler, Juntos Avanzamos founder and Cornerstone Credit Union League president/CEO. "This program provides insights products, programs, and aptitudes necessary to appeal to the Hispanic/Latino marketplace."
