As a leader, it is important to set high expectations, says Erin Mendez, president/CEO of Patelco Credit Union in Pleasanton, Calif., a Bay Area community midway between Oakland and San Jose.
Mendez has spent more than 25 years in the financial services industry, starting when a friend’s mom helped her land a job as a part-time bank teller to pay her way through college. She rose through the banking ranks and later spent 10 years at SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union, where she became executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Mendez has led $5 billion asset Patelco since August 2013, overseeing a period of massive growth driven in part by a courageous decision to slash nearly $1 million in fees to stimulate greater member engagement.
Mendez recently spoke with Credit Union Magazine about her leadership principles and why networking through the new CUNA CEO Council is important for CEOs.
