I imagine you’ve come across the phrase “CUNA/league” in quite a few of our communications recently, and it's important to me that you understand the true meaning behind it.
When we at CUNA talk about the value of membership, we point to our unwavering advocacy work, to our dedication to raising awareness of and promoting the credit union difference, and to providing solutions that help credit unions offer unmatched service to members.
But that value isn’t fully realized without collaboration between CUNA and the state leagues as we work together as a system on your behalf.
CUNA’s value truly lies in our strong relationships with our league partners. That’s what sets us apart, and that’s what we mean when we say "CUNA/league."
That unwavering advocacy I mentioned?
Our collective voice—the CUNA/league voice—rings loudest on Capitol Hill, in all 50 state legislatures, with our state and federal regulators, and in the courts when we fight to protect credit union interests side by side.
Consider that without CUNA/ league collaboration in advocacy, 75% of Congress wouldn’t have written to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau this year urging Director Richard Cordray to use his exemption authority on credit unions.
Without CUNA/league collaboration, we wouldn’t have seen 199 out of 203 credit union-backed candidates win their congressional primaries.
Instead, 98% of the candidates we supported together are in a position to claim or reclaim seats in Congress.
CUNA’s well-connected and bipartisan advocacy staff is highly skilled and darn effective in fighting for credit union interests.
When they work alongside their counterparts at the leagues, that efficacy only increases.
The same applies to our compliance team and to the learning and professional development programs we provide.
CUNA and league members have access to the most complete collection of products and programs in the industry, and to an unparalleled library of research, information, and resources.
I assure you, it would be difficult to find a more experienced and dynamic stable of compliance staff in the financial services industry than those to which CUNA/league members have access.
These combined resources offer you 50-state coverage—at both the state and federal levels—for unmatched credit union learning and compliance needs.
Meanwhile, only the CUNA/league system could have assembled a cross section of credit union marekting professionals—representing leagues, credit union service organizations, large and small state and federal credit unions—as it did with the Creating Awareness Advisory Group.
The group is working to develop an ongoing, sustainable initiative that creates top-of-mind consumer awareness of and belief in credit unions as the best choice in financial services at the national level.
We will be most successful in this effort when we unite our voices, amplifying the presence and the relevance of credit unions in the financial services marketplace.
This is the value of membership: CUNA, representing nearly all 6,000 of America’s credit unions, and the leagues, representing all 50 states and Washington, D.C., working in concert to support credit unions across the country.
CUNA and the leagues are stronger together.
There’s no greater value proposition for your credit union.
JIM NUSSLE is president/CEO of CUNA.
