In writing “Hearts of Courage,” a book about his father’s true survival story, long-time credit union CEO John Tippets uncovered some important leadership lessons.
He shared both the story and those lessons at the CUNA Community Credit Union Conference and The Federation 2016 Annual Meeting in Dallas.
“Hearts of Courage” is an account of Joseph Tippets’ 29 days in the Alaskan wilderness following a plane crash during the coldest winter in decades. More than a survival story or adventure yarn, “Hearts of Courage” is a testament to the power of hope, faith, courage, and endurance.
Three leadership takeaways from the ordeal:
1. Basic skills and knowledge matter when dealing with unforeseen challenges and making critical decisions.
2. Teams can accomplish more than individuals alone.
3. Don’t despair during difficult times. Persevere, fix problems, and find solutions.
Tippets was president/CEO of American Airlines Federal Credit Union in Dallas for 42 years.
He subsequently served as president/CEO of the North Island Credit Union in San Diego and as interim CEO at Alliance Federal Credit Union in Lubbock, Texas.
