Owning who you are is the secret to being a great leader, according to CUNA Chief Engagement Officer Mollie Bell.
The most effective leaders know themselves well and are authentic to that, Bell tells the How To Conference by CU Water Cooler in Madison, Wis.
“We want to follow people who are real,” Bell says.
Bell advises credit union leaders to:
• Write a personal mission statement. Understand yourself at a deeper level.
Peel the onion that is you. Discover your core values, Bell says.
• Unpack your junk. Tell your root story. Write down your defining moments. Understand and accept them.
• Be a little vulnerable. Sometimes the most important life moments are heartbreak. Understand how they wrap into your journey and share them.
Vulnerability allows us to be empathetic human beings.
Just be you, especially at work, Bell says.
