Assistance for government shutdown continues

Credit unions continue to offer assistance to members in financial need as a result of the continuing government shutdown.

Among the credit unions announcing assistance programs:

  • Members of Signal Financial Federal Credit Union, Kensington, Md., directly affected by the shutdown may request temporary services from the credit union to help them weather the furlough. Among the support furloughed federal employees may request are advances of up to 90% of their regular monthly pay and case-by-case deferments of loan payments. The credit union will also evaluate fees paid by affected members who request relief, and may waive fees incurred during the furlough period.
  • Miami Federal Credit Union’s furlough relief loan includes 60 days with no interest. If the member elects not to pay the loan in full, the remaining balance will convert to a signature loan with a repayment set at 24 months with rates as  low as 12% annual percentage rate (APR). Members with existing loans can defer up to two monthly payments.
  • California Credit Union, Glendale, Calif., offers loan payment assistance, penalty-free certificate withdrawals, and reduced-rate signature loans.
  • Justice Federal Credit Union, Chantilly, Va., offers special assistance in the form of an unsecured, low-rate loan and deferred payments to affected members. Members in good standing with a Justice Federal consumer loan or credit card may defer loan payments and request assistance with their mortgage.
  • America First Credit Union, Riverdale, Utah, is providing a special furlough assistance loan. The personal loan of up to $4,000 will be made available to federal employees who have been furloughed due to the recent government shutdown. America First also offers members no-cost counseling services, loan extensions, and numerous free and low-cost benefits.
  • Scott Credit Union, Edwardsville, Ill., offers a six-month, 0% APR Government Shutdown Loan to government and civil service employees working without pay during the shutdown. Members who receive the loan will not have to make any payments for 30 days.

Other credit unions have also announced assistance programs.
