Minnesota CUs bring their message to state capitol

Minnesota credit unions attend the 2019 Credit Union Day at the Capitol in St. Paul, Minn.

Over 100 credit union staff and volunteers attended the 2019 Credit Union Day at the Capitol in St. Paul, Minn., to help kick off the Minnesota Credit Union Network’s (MnCUN) agenda for the legislative session.

Attendees heard from state leaders including House Minority Leader Kurt Daudt, House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler, Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka and Minnesota Department of Commerce Commissioner Steve Kelley on this session’s legislative priorities.

“2019 CU Day was an important opportunity to bring the credit union message to elected officials and share how they can help support credit unions succeed in their mission of serving their members,” said MnCUN’s Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Association Services Mara Humphrey.

Members from all over Minnesota met with their elected representatives and talked about issues of importance to their industry. Notable visits included high school students working with Hiway CU, St. Paul, meeting with Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk and House Commerce Chair Laurie Halverson.

The event coincided with the launch of CUNA’s Open Your Eyes campaign in Minnesota – the first state to roll out the national awareness campaign. The campaign’s national, digital-first strategy positions research-proven messages to disprove consumer myths associated with the ability to join and access to money.

Credit Union Day at the Capitol provides credit unions professionals and volunteers the unique opportunity to learn about legislative issues and meet with elected officials. This important advocacy event forms the foundation for a positive working relationship with legislators throughout the 2019 Legislative Session.v
