CUNA advocacy continues on robocall ruling and regulatory review

June 12, 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 12, 2019

Credit Union National Association (CUNA) sent letters to Congress today ahead of the Senate Commerce hearing on Federal Communications Commission (FCC) oversight and to show support of the Comprehensive Regulatory Review Act.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai recently announced that the commission voted to approve its default call-blocking order, which includes a modification that gives callers a mechanism to file complaints with voice carriers over erroneously blocked calls. CUNA and credit union members believe that it is critical the FCC devote more attention to their recent efforts relating to call-blocking services of robocalls. Over 1,000 credit unions contacted the FCC with letters describing concerns and urging changes to the proposal so that credit unions can continue to communicate and provide members with critical information. CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle says that while the decision is a step in the right direction, the Committee on should further encourage the FCC to take action and put rulemakings in place to ensure that legally permissible calls are not impacted by the order granting voice service providers opt-out, call-blocking
authority. Read the letter in full here.

CUNA today also wrote to Representatives Loudermilk and Gottheimer to show credit union support for the Comprehensive Regulatory Review Act. The legislation would amend the Economic and Regulatory Paperwork Reduction Act of 1996 (EGRPRA) to require the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council and federal regulators such as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) to review existing regulations once every seven years. Currently, the NCUA voluntarily reviews regulations every three years, one-third every year. CUNA aims to ensure that the NCUA’s review process is not affected by pending legislation. Read the letter in full here.
