GAC: Tuesday recap, Wednesday preview

CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference continued Tuesday with discussions about regulations, the presidential election, and more:

  • CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle joined former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley for a "fireside chat." "What I love about credit unions is they're more about families and community and they truly get the customer service side of things," Haley said.
  • NCUA Chairman Rodney Hood and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Kathy Kraninger discussed transparent, efficient regulations. Hood also announced that the NCUA will conduct a comprehensive review of all its guidance letters and legal opinions to determine if they are still relevant in today's regulatory climate.
  • Chris Lorence, executive director of Credit Union Awareness, updated attendees on the Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union® campaign. "We have a tremendous opportunity to grow as an industry," Lorence said. "Each of us, regardless of asset size, location, and membership type can shift our mindset to one of growth and potential."
  • Newly elected CUNA Board Chairman Troy Stang detailed his credit union journey and laid out goals for his term. Stang said credit unions need to continue to evolve and remain relevant. "Let's stand proud knowing that our financial model, credit unions, is the only model that is directly accountable to those it serves," he said.
  • Legislators praised credit unions for the work they do advancing communities and shared policies they're pushing to help make that work easier. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), and Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) addressed attendees during the session.
  • Political adviser David Plouffe shared his thoughts on communication, attention, and the 2020 election. "All of you, in your organizations and communities, are trying to find the best way to reach people," Plouffe said. "If you want to reach tough-to-reach people today, particularly anyone under the age of 40, you've got to think visual first."
  • Exhibit Hall "lightning" sessions featured seven-minute presentations from cutting-edge providers. The topics included data analytics, mobile apps, member verification tools, and more.
  • The day's breakout sessions examined topics ranging from CEO leadership to diversity to data privacy.

Coming up on Wednesday:

On the mainstage, Stephanie Cutter, founding partner at Precision Strategies and a former Obama administration adviser; and GOP strategist Nicolle Wallace, special assistant to the president and director of media affairs at the White House under President George W. Bush, will discuss the 2020 presidential campaign. Troy Stang, CUNA board chairman and president/CEO of the Northwest Credit Union Association, will lead the discussion.

Congressional lawmakers addressing attendees from the main stage include:

  • U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa)
  • U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.)
  • U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner (D. Mo.)
  • U.S. Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.)
  • U.S. Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio) (Tentative)

NCUA Board member Todd Harper will also provide an update from the agency.

On Wednesday afternoon, credit union advocates from around the country will head to Capitol Hill for their annual hill visits with Congressional representatives.
