All 12 credit union supported candidates were victorious in their primary elections Tuesday in Ohio. The elections were postponed due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and were conducted via mail-in ballot.
Rep. Joyce Beatty (D) defeated her primary challenger Morgan Harper, taking 68% of the vote when all absentee ballots were counted. Beatty is a strong credit union champion and was fully supported by CUNA and the Ohio Credit Union League.
Beatty, who chairs the House Financial Services subcommittee on diversity and inclusion, has sponsored Financial Literacy Month resolutions recognizing credit unions and the service they provide for members and communities, and sponsored legislation allowing privately insured credit unions to join the Federal Home Loan Bank Program.
Language from Beatty’s bill was eventually signed into law by President Barack Obama.
