DEI discussed as NCUA’s Harper joins CUNA subcommittee call

June 18, 2020

NCUA Board Member Todd Harper joined this week’s meeting of CUNA’s Consumer Protection Subcommittee Thursday to talk about a number of topics, including what credit unions can do to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in light of the national dialogue on these issues.

The subcommittee monitors developments, addresses concerns and advises CUNA staff in the area of consumer financial protection laws and regulations.

Harper shared his priorities during the pandemic, as well as thoughts on NCUA’s role in helping credit unions and member recover from the pandemic, and subcommittee members shared with him ways NCUA could help remove barriers and help increase member service.

Harper, in communications with Congress, has supported several CUNA priorities, including:

  • Extending the sunset of Central Liquidity Facility enhancements implemented by the CARES Act;
  • Exempting member business loans made during the COVID-19 emergency from the statutory member business lending cap;
  • Allowing all federal credit union charter types to add underserved communities to their field of membership; and
  • Increasing funding for NCUA’s Community Development Revolving Loan Fund.

Last month Harper joined CUNA’s Examination and Supervision Subcommittee call, and later released a transcript of his remarks, in which he  encouraged credit unions to join the Central Liquidity Facility, among other topics covered.
