Credit unions release final ads in $7M effort in 2020 election

October 8, 2020
Elections

CUNA and its federal PAC, the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC), wrapped up its $7 million effort aimed at electing credit union champions with a series of independent expenditures (IEs) and member communications aimed at reelecting three vulnerable incumbents in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“We are adamant about supporting candidates who recognize and support the credit union difference for consumers across the country,” said Trey Hawkins, CUNA deputy chief advocacy officer for political action. “With no preference for one party or the other, we remain focused on helping those who help credit unions and their 120 million members.”

The last of eleven political advertising campaigns this cycle, CUNA and CULAC have directed targeted mail and digital video advertisements to voters and credit union members in:

  • Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, backing Rep. Jared Golden (D).
  • Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District, supporting Rep. Susie Lee (D).
  • Ohio’s 1st Congressional District, in support of Rep. Steve Chabot (R).

The groups’ ads feature positive messages to sway voters’ opinions.

Already this cycle, credit unions have launched IEs and credit union member communications supporting four sitting U.S. Senators and four incumbent U.S. Representatives in pivotal races from Maine to New Mexico.

“Forty-four percent of registered voters belong to a credit union, and by reminding these consumers just how important it is that they not only vote, but that their vote has a direct impact on their credit union, we want to make sure that credit union members make their voice heard,” added Hawkins.

CUNA and state credit union leagues are also mobilizing the nation’s 120 million credit union members, connecting them with pertinent information to help them vote in November through the Credit Unions Vote website.

These efforts are part of a $7 million initiative undertaken by CUNA, CULAC, and the state credit union leagues to support over 350 congressional candidates throughout the 2020 election cycle.
