Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) welcomed attendees to the 2021 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) Tuesday and was followed by Congressional leaders throughout the day. Schumer pledged to work with credit unions throughout the recovery to ensure the doors of opportunity remain open for all.
“My message today is simple: thank you, thank you. Thank you for your work over the last 12 months,” he said. “Credit unions are the glue of so many local economies, the essential institutions that get money into the hands of truly small, rural, and underserved businesses who could not have made it this far without you.”
Schumer added that, in addition to the latest round of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic relief legislation, he intends to work on several pressing issues for credit unions, including strengthening data privacy laws. He also confirmed his commitment to maintaining the credit union tax status.
