Credit union-supported New Mexico State Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D) won Tuesday’s special election to represent the state’s 1st Congressional District. The election was held to fill the seat of former Rep. Deb. Haaland, who was appointed Secretary of the Interior.
Stansbury defeated challenger, Republican State Sen. Mark Moores, with 63% of the vote. She was supported by CUNA and the Credit Union Association of New Mexico.
“Melanie took time to meet virtually with New Mexico credit union leaders and expressed her support for maintaining our tax-exempt status and praised credit unions for their hard work during the pandemic with PPP loans and more,” said Paul Stull, CEO of the Credit Union Association of New Mexico. “We are pleased to welcome her as New Mexico’s newest credit union champion.”
Stansbury has served in the New Mexico House since 2018, and was previously a Senate aide, including on the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, and for Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.).
The Credit Union Legislative Action Council, CUNA’s federal political action committee, donated $5,000 toward Stansbury’s campaign.
