Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) died Tuesday. He was 82.

“Harry Reid was a credit union champion whose leadership made a lasting impact for consumers across the country,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle.

During a 30-year career in the Senate, Reid championed several credit union priorities, including legislation allowing credit unions the ability to offer Attorney Trust Accounts (IOLTAs), member business lending legislation, and granting eligibility to privately insured credit unions to become members of Federal Home Loan Banks.

“As the Senior Senator from Nevada, the credit union leadership and members of the Silver State enjoyed a close, open, and at times very straightforward relationship with the Senator,” read a statement from the Nevada Credit Union League. “Throughout his Senate career, and especially during his tenure as both the Minority and Majority Leader of the United States Senate, Senator Reid aided credit unions and our members in the times we needed him most.”

Reid was Senate Majority Leader during the passage of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
