Congress returns with CFPB, FINCEN, and fintech hearings

After a two-week recess, the House and Senate are both back in session this week.  

Both the House Financial Services Committee and the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs will hold hearings with Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Rohit Chopra this week. CUNA will engage with both committees to express credit union priorities regarding the Bureau.  

The Senate will resume consideration of Lael Brainard to be Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System for a term of four years. 

The Senate Banking Committee will hold a markup to consider the nominations of Ventris C. Gibson, of Virginia, to be Director of the Mint, and Paul M. Rosen, of California, to be Assistant Secretary for Investment Security, both of the Department of the Treasury. 

The House of Representatives will consider S. 3522, the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022; and H.R. 350, the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act of 2022.  

CUNA will be engaged in several other hearings, including: 

  • Tuesday, 10 AM ET: Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing: "The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Semi-Annual Report to Congress." 

  • Tuesday, 2:30 PM ET: Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Subcommittee On Economic Policy hearing: "Child Care and Other Policy Tools to Combat Bottlenecks and Inflation." 

  • Wednesday, 10 AM ET: House Committee on Small Business hearing: “Small Business Administration's FY 2023 Budget.”  

  • Wednesday, 10 AM ET: House Committee on Financial Services hearing: “Consumers First: Semi-Annual Report of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.” 

  • Wednesday, 2 PM ET: Senate Appropriations Committee Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs hearing: “Review of the Fiscal Year 2023 Budget Request for the U.S. Department of State.” 

  • Wednesday, 2:30 PM ET: Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee hearing: "Oversight of the U.S. Small Business Administration." 

  • Thursday, 10 AM ET: House Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs hearing: “Fiscal Year 2023 Budget Request for the Department of State.” 

  • Thursday, 10 AM ET: House Committee on Financial Services hearing: “Oversight of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.” 

  • Thursday, 2 PM ET: House Committee on Financial Services Task Force on Financial Technology hearing: “What’s in Your Digital Wallet? A Review of Recent Trends in Mobile Banking and Payments.”
