Credit union supporters win across five states in Tuesday’s primaries

May 18, 2022
Elections

Twenty-nine credit union supporters won in primary elections in Idaho, Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Oregon Tuesday. Candidates were supported by Credit Union Legislative Action Council, CUNA’s political action committee; and the Northwest Credit Union Association, Kentucky Credit Union League, Carolinas Credit Union League, and CrossState Credit Union Association.

Tuesday’s wins bring the total number of credit union supporter wins to 73 out of 76 races, with the remaining three races yet to be called—or in the case of Texas’ 28th Congressional District, headed to a May 24 runoff.

Complete results are available cuna.org/elections, and the page will be updated with each week’s results.

Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, took 53.3% of the vote against the field in the Republican primary for the 2nd Congressional District.

North Carolina State Sen. Chuck Edwards defeated Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C. in the Republican primary in the state’s 11th Congressional District.

Edwards is a local businessman and strong credit union supporter who has worked with credit unions in Raleigh and western North Carolina.

Other winners include:

  • Kentucky: State Sen. Morgan McGarvey defeated Attica Scott with 63.5% of the vote in the state’s Democratic primary to fil the seat left open by retiring Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Ky.
  • North Carolina:
    • State Sen. Valerie Foushee took 47.4% of the vote over a field of challengers in the Democratic primary in the 4th Congressional District.
    • State Sen. Jeff Jackson defeated challenger Ramin Mammadov with 86.1% of the vote in the Democratic primary for the 14th Congressional District.
  • Oregon: State Labor Commissioner Val Hoyle took 65.8% of the vote over the field in the Democratic primary for the state’s 4th Congressional District.

CULAC, one of the five largest trade association PACs nationally, is the credit union system’s principal means of engaging in federal elections. CULAC works with state Leagues to identify, vet, and support candidates for Congress of either party who are supportive of credit unions and the CUNA-League system’s efforts to promote financial well-being for all.
