Credit union supporters win primaries, special election Tuesday

June 29, 2022
Elections

Credit union champions won in primaries in several states and a special election in Nebraska Tuesday. Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) and state Leagues have backed 213 credit union champions this cycle with a 98% success rate.

CULAC and the Illinois Credit Union League (ICUL) supported 14 candidates, including, Illinois State Rep. Delia Ramirez, a Democrat, won in the newly drawn open 3rd District race.

CULAC-backed Rep. Sean Casten, D-6, beat Rep. Marie Newman, D-3, in a member-on-member primary to run for the 6th Congressional District in November. Redistricting drew the two into the same district.

In Mississippi, CULAC and the Mississippi Credit Union Association backed Rep. Michael Guest, R-03, in the Republican primary runoff. Guest took 67.3% of the vote against challenger Michael Cassidy.

Nebraska State Rep. Mike Flood—supported by CULAC and Nebraska Credit Union League—won Tuesday’s special election for the 1st Congressional District and will be seated in the 117th Congress in the coming weeks.

CULAC also partnered with three other Leagues Tuesday. Together with Cornerstone League, 5 credit union-friendly candidates won in Oklahoma; five won in Utah in partnership with Utah’s Credit Unions; and with the Mountain West Credit Union Association, two incumbents advanced to the general election.

CULAC is one of the five largest trade association PACs and among the most bipartisan PACs in the country. CULAC works with state leagues to identify, vet, and back congressional candidates who support credit unions and the CUNA-League system’s efforts to promote financial well-being for all.
