Midterm Elections 2022: Credit Union Effect on Key House, Senate Races

November 9, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 9, 2022
Washington, D.C.

Credit union champions from around the country were victorious in Tuesday’s mid-term elections. Credit Union National Association (CUNA), its federal PAC Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) and state leagues invested $6.6 million in support of 398 candidates, including 9 priority races, on the ballot Tuesday.

“We congratulate the credit union champions who won Tuesday night, and we look forward to working closely with them in the next Congress on policies that will allow credit unions to increase services to members and communities,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle.

As of Wednesday morning, 98% of CULAC-backed candidates in races called have won. Notable wins which CUNA invested in advertising include:

  • Alabama Republican Katie Britt was elected to the U.S. Senate.
    • CUNA coordinated with League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates targeted member communications campaign in support of Britt in her successful primary and runoff elections earlier this year.
  • Rep. Sanford Bishop, D-Ga., was re-elected to represent Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District.
  • Rep. Ashley Hinson (R) won Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District.
  • In New Hampshire, Democrat Rep. Chris Pappas won in the 1st District and Democrat Rep. Ann Kuster won in the 2nd District.
  • Rep. Don Bacon (R) won Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District.

Forty-six credit union supporters won open seat races this election cycle, so far.

Outstanding races that have not been called include:

  • Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) remains locked in a tight race against challenger Adam Laxalt.
  • Republican Rep. David Valadao leads in California’s 22nd District.
