Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., thanked credit unions Tuesday from the main stage at the CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) for their support in her recent election. Credit unions supported Britt—the youngest Republican woman elected to the U.S. Senate—last year with a targeted member communications campaign.

Britt, a member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, thanked credit unions for supporting her even when she was down 2%-65% in early Republican primary polls.

“Your leaders and members were generous with their resources, time, and talent, and you helped me get out the vote in a really big way,” she said. “Moving forward, I’m looking forward to working alongside my colleagues and people like you across the nation to get us headed in the right direction.”

She also pledged that her door would always be open, and she would work to ensure the Financial Services Committee establishes clear rules of the road and slashes burdensome regulations.

“I’m excited to be on the Senate Banking Committee, including the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Protection,” she said. “Credit unions are an important, critical piece of serving the financial needs of the whole community, families, and small businesses in every corner of my great state of Alabama and across this nation.”

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., also greeted CUNA GAC attendees Tuesday via video address. Tillis is a longtime supporter of credit union legislation, most recently co-sponsoring the Credit Union Board Modernization Act—to update federal credit union meeting requirements—in the last Congress.

“I was proud to work on a bipartisan basis on S. 2155. That bill provides relief to small institutions from Dodd-Frank regulations,” he said. “I continue to look for opportunities to further decrease the burdensome regulations on credit unions.”

Tillis is also a member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee.
