For Bob Schumacher, Herb Wegner Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, leadership is about helping and empowering.
“I would love to have etched on my gravestone when I pass: ‘He helped a lot of people.’ If that is even part of the reason I’m being recognized, then I’m very blessed,” says the retired president/CEO of MountainCrest Credit Union in Arlington, Wash.
His best leadership advice: “Watch, listen, learn, and then lead by example.
“Having experienced autocratic management,” Schumacher adds, “I soon realized that it doesn’t work very well. Leading with empowerment— managing by exception when things need attention and staying out of the way when they don’t—is many times the most powerful and effective.”
In addition to Schumacher, Clarence Hall Jr., CEO, Issaquena County Federal Credit Union; and Mike Mercer, president/CEO, Georgia Credit Union Affiliates will also receive Lifetime Achievement honors. The Iowa Credit Union League will receive an Outstanding Organization Award.
The awards, given by the National Credit Union Foundation, are named for the late CUNA CEO Herb Wegner and are one of the credit union movement’s highest national honors.
