MADISON, Wis. (11/17/14)--A number of credit union foundations have signed up for Amazon's new fundraising service AmazonSmile, which allows Amazon customers to pick charitable organizations that Amazon will donate to each time a purchase is made on the online-shopping giant's website.
To use the service, shoppers should plug in the website smile.amazon.com--rather than amazon.com--sign in or sign up for an Amazon account, and then designate one of the participating organizations for donation when shopping.
Products marked "Eligible for AmazonSmile donation" qualify for the program through AmazonSmile. Amazon will then donate 0.5% of each purchase made to the organization of the purchaser's choice.
Search for credit union-related organizations that are participating in the program and more than 165 results will populate.
They include national organizations such as the National Credit Union Foundation, and several other state foundations such as the Minnesota Credit Union Foundation.
"The foundation is excited to test drive this new fundraising vehicle, and we hope Minnesota credit unions will use AmazonSmile when shopping online for business or personal purchases," said Dave Larson, foundation chair. "With a shopping experience identical to Amazon.com, this fundraiser has great potential to generate new revenue for the foundation and provide additional grant funding for professional development and financial education initiatives."
The Louisiana Credit Union League, meanwhile, is encouraging members and others to pick its Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions to help the league expand services to the most remote areas of the world.
But the Louisiana league isn't the only organization promoting special programs through AmazonSmile.
Zia CU, Los Alamos, N.M., with $131 million in assets, has signed up its education foundation that funds scholarships and other student financial aid initiatives.
And the handful of credit unions that make up the Tampa Bay Area Credit Unions for Kids organization have listed their charitable effort on the website as well.
