LOWELL, Mass. (9/5/14)--Jeanne D'Arc CU, with $1 billion in assets, Lowell, Mass., has helped raise, collect and distribute more than $260,000 victims of a July 10 fire in Lowell that killed seven people and displaced dozens of families.
The money will go toward relief efforts for 46 people affected by what has become known as the Branch Street fire. The credit union worked with Community Teamwork Inc., the city of Lowell and the Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association to gather the donations, which were received from throughout the country.
Jeanne D'Arc CU collected donations during the Lowell Summer Music Series, for which it is a sponsor, and at a Lowell Spinners minor league baseball game, Michelle Silveira, senior vice president/chief marketing officer at the credit union, told News Now.
The funds helped victims pay for expenses accumulated as they pieced their lives back together following the fire, such as paying for utilities in new residences or new driver's license fees. Other costs included covering hotels where many families temporarily stayed before finding new permanent homes.
