BROOKFIELD, Wis. (4/7/15)--Consumers are increasingly using mobile to make bill payments according to new research commissioned by Fiserv.
Almost 1 in 5 visits to a biller's website come from a mobile device--a 55% increase over 2013. Of those visits, bill payment is the No. 1 consumer activity.
"In terms of customer interaction, the mobile channel is moving from an 'early adopter' stage to mainstream use, especially when it comes to billing and payment," the white paper said. "Consumers now expect billers to offer mobile bill pay capabilities in the form of apps, mobile browsers and text, as well as paperless e-bills and mobile alerts."
Mobile bill pay adoption mirrors smartphone adoption, according to the Fiserv research. About 66% of online households now have smartphones, an increase of 22%.
Forty percent of smartphone owners paid bills with apps, mobile browsers or texts using their phones in the last month--a 33% year-over-year increase. In addition, the number of bills smartphone owners paid via mobile increased 48% over last year.
Overall, mobile bill payers grew by 69% in 2014 and now include 27% of U.S. online households.
When consumers were asked to list the reasons they use mobile bill pay, most mentioned ease, time savings and convenience as the top reasons.
When making mobile payments, most mobile bill payers are most comfortable using a financial institution's mobile website (56%) or a biller's mobile website (60%).
Also, consumers are increasingly using cards instead of checks to make on-the-go payments. Of bills paid using a smartphone's texting, browser or app capabilities, half were card-funded with either debit cards (24%), credit cards (17%) or prepaid debit or credit card (9%).
